This Version of the Kansas City Chiefs Has Run Its Course
Looking for a knockout instead of setting our opponents up, that's what’s been going on this season and in my opinion that’s why Andy made the call to go for it on 4th down in our own territory with 10 minutes left in the game against the Texans.
It changed the game, it gave the Texans offense who had been struggling for the entire 2nd half up to that point some life and a short field which led to a go ahead touchdown on that drive. Our defense led by future hall of famer Chris Jones was playing out of their mind. Why not punt the ball and let them win this game for us? Instead Andy got cocky, he swung and missed and that decision may have knocked us out of playoff contention for this season.
The Chiefs look very uncomfortable in the current position they’re in. Constant winning will do that to you. It'll have you searching for bail outs because you’re used to things always going in your favor and, unfortunately for the Chiefs, the ball hasn’t bounced in their direction this season. Over the last 7 years, teams drafted and built their teams to beat us and as their teams improved we’ve regressed. In my opinion, this current Chiefs team as we know has run its course — and it's okay.
The best thing about sports and why we love it is that you have to keep reinventing yourself or someone else will force you too. We’ve had our share of offensive woes since Matt Nagy came back as our offensive coordinator in 2023. Our offensive line has been an issue. I've been repeating on my podcast “The Tim Show” that we’re in need of a Bell Cow Running Back, someone we can rely on for 20-25 carries per game and spell Patrick Mahomes of carrying the boat load of the offense on his shoulders as he heads into his 30’s. You cannot replace Travis Kelce but drafting a bigger target at WR who can catch 50/50 balls can be an answer instead of always drafting a speedy guy who compliments Andy Reid’s offensive system. I think we have enough of those at this point, maybe it’s time for a little tweak. But why would they? We've been in the last 3 Superbowls which gave us no reason to face our growing problems. Band-Aids have been covering them up so well, but this year the wounds are too big for a Band-Aid to cover. They’re exposed and these improved teams are beating us up especially in close games. It's not that we’re not good enough, it's simply because a little shakeup needs to happen and I think if we somehow sneak into the playoffs this year we’ll keep running away from it. If we don’t make the playoffs we will finally have to look ourselves in the mirror and change a few things, and in my opinion It’s going to have to start at the top.
Everyone on the offensive coaching staff not named Andy Reid needs to go, yes I said it clean house! Accountability was something Eric Bieniemy preached and that’s been gone since Matt Nagy took over, hence the sloppy play on offense and the countless drive stalling penalties we commit every game. I think we need bigger guys in the trenches, that's the offensive and defensive line respectfully. The time of having finesse players on the line has passed us by. Teams are straight up bullying us where it matters. Hopefully the outcome of this down season will lead to change. If not, we will waste the back end of Patrick Mahomes' prime because in my opinion this version of the Kansas City Chiefs is over!
