The HYROX Problem Nobody Trains For
Walk through the athlete area at any HYROX event and you will see the same split. On one side, people who have clearly spent eight months learning how to run on legs that no longer work — controlled breathing, disciplined warm-ups, a plan for the sled. On the other side, those same people, two hours later, trying to stuff a pair of soaking wet shoes into a drawstring bag while holding a half-eaten banana in their teeth.
The sport has grown fast enough that the training conversation is now genuinely sophisticated. Athletes talk about compromised running paces, sled push mechanics, and where in the race to spend their matches. The logistics conversation has not caught up at all.
That is a strange gap, because HYROX is unusually demanding on the logistics side. More so than a road race. More so than most CrossFit competitions. And unlike your sled technique, it is a problem you can solve completely in about twenty minutes of thinking.
What the format actually asks of you
The structure is fixed everywhere in the world: eight one-kilometre runs, each one followed by a workout station. SkiErg, sled push, sled pull, burpee broad jumps, row, farmers carry, sandbag lunges, and then wall balls to finish. For most athletes in the Open division it takes somewhere between an hour and ninety minutes.
What makes the day complicated is not the race. It is the container the race happens in.
HYROX runs inside large indoor venues — convention halls, expo centres, arenas. You arrive well before your start wave. You check in. You drop your bag somewhere that is usually nowhere near where you finish. You warm up in a crowded corral. You race. You come out the other side in a state, and then you have to walk a considerable distance back to your belongings and carry everything out.
That sequence has three completely different phases, and most athletes pack for only one of them.
Three phases, three different jobs
Before the start. You are in a cold venue for an hour or more, and you need to stay warm without overheating. Layers you will take off. A band or roller. Food timed to your wave. Fluid. Race number, pins, timing chip, and whatever the event requires. This phase rewards a bag you can get into repeatedly without unpacking it.
During the race. Your bag is sitting in a bag drop, stacked in a pile with several hundred others, being moved by volunteers who are not treating it gently. This phase rewards structure and zippers that survive being crushed.
After the finish. This is the phase that ruins gear. Everything you are wearing is saturated. Your shoes have picked up wall ball dust, chalk, and whatever was on the floor near the sled lane. You are cold within ten minutes. And now all of it has to go into the same bag as your clean clothes, your phone, and the food you are about to eat — then travel back to a hotel or a car or a train.
Phase three is why so many athletes finish their first race and immediately buy a different bag.
The common failure modes
The drawstring bag is the most popular choice and the worst one. No structure, no separation, and everything inside it touches everything else. Wet kit contaminates the entire contents.
The running vest or small daypack is too small the moment you add a second pair of shoes. Most athletes race in something different from what they warmed up in, which means two pairs, not one.
The standard gym duffel handles volume fine but is a single cavity. You end up excavating. In a corral, ninety seconds before your wave is called, excavating is not what you want to be doing.
The technical travel backpack is clean and organised but usually built for airports, not for abrasion. The fabric is chosen for weight savings. Sled residue and repeated stacking find that out quickly.
What actually matters
Volume, honestly assessed. A solo athlete travelling to a race needs room for a full change of clothes, two pairs of shoes, food, fluid, recovery kit, and layers. In practice that lands somewhere around 40 to 50 litres. Smaller looks tidier on a shelf and fails on the day.
Wet-dry separation. If you take one thing from this article, take this one. A dedicated compartment that isolates soaked kit and dirty shoes from everything else is the single highest-value feature for this sport specifically. It is more important here than in almost any other athletic discipline, because HYROX guarantees you finish wet and dirty rather than merely making it likely.
Abrasion resistance and zipper quality. The bag is going to be stacked, dragged, and dropped. Lightweight ripstop is the wrong trade-off. Heavy denier fabric and hardware from a manufacturer you have heard of are the right one.
A full-opening design. Bags that open flat let you see everything at once instead of digging through a vertical tube. Under time pressure, in a loud room, this matters more than it sounds like it should.
None of this is exotic, but it is specific enough that general-purpose gear guides are not much help. Doubles and relay make it worse
In Doubles you are sharing a station rotation with a partner, which usually means shared food, shared recovery kit, and one person carrying more than half of it. Relay teams multiply the problem by four. In both cases the bag stops being personal gear and becomes team logistics, and the volume requirement goes up accordingly.
Teams that figure this out designate a bag and a person. Teams that do not spend the twenty minutes before their wave asking each other who has the tape.
A packing method that works
Pack in reverse order of use, in three groups.
Group one, at the top: what you need in the last ten minutes before your wave. Race number, chip, band, gel, the layer you will strip off last.
Group two, in the main compartment: the post-race change of clothes, sealed and untouched.
Group three, in the isolated compartment: nothing on the way in. Everything wet and dirty on the way out.
Load it the night before, not the morning of. On race morning you will not think clearly, and you should not have to.
The point
HYROX rewards preparation in a way that is unusually literal. The athletes who do well are rarely the ones with the most talent — they are the ones who removed the most variables before the start gun.
Race-day logistics is the cheapest variable on the list to remove. It costs you one evening and one sensible purchase, and it buys back a meaningful amount of stress on a day when you have none to spare.
